Ed Sheeran launches ‘supermarket’ wine club

Ed Sheeran has launched a weekly wine club through his London restaurant Bertie Blossoms on Portobello Road flagging up top supermarket drops.

As reported by The Sun, the Wednesday Wine Club used to highlight some of the most exciting wines on Bertie Blossoms’ list, but during the lockdown has evolved to shine a light on interesting supermarket wines in the UK.

The Supermarket Wine Club is being run by Sheeran’s restaurant manager, Sebastian Skilling, who has thus far recommended four different drops on Instagram.

During our recent spate of sunny weather, Skilling took the opportunity to shine a light on a pair of rosés – the Grenache dominant Château de Route from Côtes de Provence, priced at £8.50 from the Co-op; and Le Bijou Sophie Valrose rosé from the Languedoc, priced at £6.99 from Waitrose.

The wine is named after Sophie Valrose, who fought for female vineyard workers’ rights in the Languedoc in the late 19th century.

On the red front, the wine club has thus far recommended a 2018 Moillard Gamay from Burgundy, while the top white pick was a £7.50 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc from Tesco.

Sheeran founded Bertie Blossoms (pictured) on Portobello Road last year. The wine list was created by Billy Smith, a sommelier at The Four Horsemen in New York, and includes an extensive Champagne offering.
